Compact BlueTooth Mechanical Keyboard Design

Project type

PCB Design

Date

December 2022

Location

San Diego

In a collaborative effort I designed my partner a portable, wireless, and aesthetically pleasing keyboard. MCU used is the NiceNano! with BLE capabilities given the nRF52840 chip. Furthermore, the MCU has a built-in adafruit bootloader that supports UF2 storage. This allows the processor to be recognized as a flash drive enabling drag-and-drop firmware flashes (.uf2).

PCB: The PCB schematic design and layout was done with Eagle CAD. I chose a 2-layer design given the low complexity of the signal density. The PCB supports an I2C OLED display, a quadrature encoder for a volume control knob. All the soldering was done by hand with attention to quality and detail.

CASE: The case designed in Fusion 360 and then cut out of 1/8" acrylic. Cut panels were assembled using heat set inserts and M2 screws. The bottom panel was chosen to be clear to show off the silkscreen art on the back.
